The Scale Breakers

by: Graham Carter
The Scale Breakers are a nomadic tribe of mercenary Ogors, primarily Maneaters, serving under the leadership of one Franz Dragonbreaker, a wandering Tyrant who ascended to head of the burgeoning warband after appearing from seemingly nowhere and wresting control from a previous chieftain while the tribe was on an expedition to the Gnarlwood.

Franz Dragonbreaker, the Worldwalker, Tyrant and chief of the Scale Breakers, is old beyond reckoning. He remembers a cursed city crushed by a tainted comet's might; he remembers voyages across a doomed world that ultimately led to himself and one of his companions being captured for later study or sacrifice by the ancestors of Azyr's Seraphon cohorts, sealed and preserved against the ravages of time in a magical stasis field--and, in the end, inadvertently transported aboard the ill-fated temple-ship Eye of Chotec to another time and place entirely as the World-That-Was fell. Though his memories of the World-That-Was are spotty at best, he remembers well how to kill and how to keep his at-times rowdy warband in line.

He earned the first of his "big names," Dragonbreaker, by slaying the first of what would be several mighty drakes before the coming of the End Times. Though he was victorious, the dying beast left its mark on him in turn; his hide is pockmarked with mutated dragon scales that occasionally serve to ward off otherwise-devastating blows.

Quest Notes:

Jae Ashenbeldame Mawseeker Jade-eater serves as the Scale Breakers’ mystic and emissary of the Maw, which appears to be a reference to an aspect of the Gulping God commonly worshiped by the Mawtribes as a whole. The wizened ogoress is not as strong physically as she used to be, but she more than makes up for it in magical might and sheer cunning; she also packs an enchanted censer to encourage foes to keep their distance–usually the last mistake they make as she rains a hail of arcane fire.
