Arbiters

by: Thomas Bouric & Confused Mechanicus
"Salt to purify, nullstone to ground. Faith to gird, brass to slay." - Eighth Lesson of Banishment.

The Arbiters guarantee the spiritual cleanliness of the Desraki Dominion. While priests and prophets promote faith in Kharneth, it is the Arbiters that purge sickness in that faith, whether it be unorthodox beliefs in the Cult of the Crimson Earth, threats to the Brasslords’ divinely-granted authority, or belief in other gods. For the Arbiters, all is permitted, everything is demanded. No less would do to safeguard the Dominion.

Arbiters operate in however manner they see fit. Some prefer clandestine methods, snatching potential dissenters into shadowy torture rooms and extracting confessions from them. They can subject a body to an endless cycle of mending and breaking, until they get the list of names and crimes they need. Others flaunt their purges, enlisting Enforcers to break down doors and drag victims to the sacrificial altars. Examples are made, the bloodier the better.

When the malefic need to be combatted, the Arbiters are the first and best line of defence against the children of Khorne’s jealous siblings. Their souls are warded against despair, sorcery and temptation, and they are armed with faith enough to banish daemons and unhallow spirits. This is a task that they sit squarely upon their own shoulders, accepting as little help as they can manage. Better to risk their own life, than the very souls of their more ignorant comrades.

The Arbiters are one of the few systems in the Desraki Dominion that comes close to living up to their boasts of meritocracy. Truly anyone can become an Arbiter’s apprentice if they catch their eye, and should they prove themselves worthy their past is no obstacle to being inducted into the order’s ranks. Precise details of the Arbiters’ makeup is shrouded however. As far as any outsider knows, the Arbiters could have no hierarchy save for a single High Arbiter above them all, or they could have rigidly structured ranks and orders within orders. No one, save the Arbiters themselves and the Brasslords, know for certain, a purposeful occlusion to mask their doings.

And lately, with the fracturing of the Dominion, it is whispered that even Brasslord Rickad has less knowledge of the inner workings of the Arbiters than a Brasslord normally should. Perhaps the High Arbiter, whoever they are, has less interest in acknowledging Rickad’s authority than their predecessors…
