The Fae

They are the nightmare, the eyes in the dark, the mocking imitation of what once was. Child Snatchers, Dream Breakers, Fate Weavers, The Living Lie. The Fae have returned to the Mortal Realms.

The Fae are few in number, though more powerful then one might imagine. They are ancient primal spirits, a forsaken relation to aelementors, but have been mysteriously locked away in the underplates of the realms since before the Age of Myth, blind to the light of Hysh and exposed to the winds of the Void

Having lived for eons underneath the realms, they have interacted with the above-worlds primarily through nightmares. With the ability to invade the dreams of mortals, snipping the fates they deem unacceptable, and controlling the weak minded if needed, they have worked their plans from afar for as long as mortals have seen shadows in their dreams. Now, with realmgates routing from the underplates, they have come back to those same lands in their own shadowy forms.

So far, few have even been seen, but it is clear that the Fae work in a particularly sinister fashion. With the ability to transform into the likeness of a mortal, they can infiltrate positions of power and influence, and thus make much more significant changes to the fates of those around them.

Those that have been found and attacked seem to retreat into their shadow form before dying, and flee into the darkness before more harm can be done. Those that attempt the destruction of the Fae often find themselves adrift in their own minds, their fate strands seemingly cut by the creature they thought to destroy. They are coming for you.

Entry into the Realms

The Fae have been able to infiltrate the Mortal Realms due to the machinations of Octenheimer and Drekazra. Though it seems unlikely that the two intended to bring forth the Fae, it was their actions while testing Realmgates that eventually led to the Fae’s arrival.

The Realmgates that the Fae arrive from are sinister indeed, leaking pure darkness, the gates slowly corrupt the land around them as all turns black and incorporeal. Indivuals who have survived seeing these gates speak of glittering eyes that peer out of the void, calling to the individual’s soul to plunge through the gate

Using the Fae in your Games:

Using the Fae in your games set in the Mortal Realms can be done in a number of ways, we’ve outlined them here if you’d like to do so for each of the systems we expect them to be used in.

Age of Sigmar

We can recommend introducing the Fae into your games of Age of Sigmar in a couple of different ways. If you choose to do so, we would highly recommend that you communicate this to your opponent.

The first is the most simple, and only impacts the game narratively. Namely, we’re encouraging players to use the Fae’s ability to transform to look and behave like other creatures by simply acknowledging that one of the Heroes in their army is actually a Fae in disguise. In this way you’re able to use an existing model, as well as its warscroll, as the Fae in question is trying to stay in disguise.

One way to push this idea further is when using the Fae within a Path to Glory host. We would recommend placing the Fae as your General, or as a Hero that seeks to attempt a coup. If you roll a 2-3 on an Injury Roll for this unit, remember that although the body the Fae inhabits is destroyed, the Fae itself is likely to flee back to its realm.

Another way we recommend using the Fae is to use the Soul Loom, our online Anvil system that allows for custom hero creation. You can find that here:

Warcry

We can recommend introducing the Fae into your games of Warcry in a couple of different ways. If you choose to do so, we would highly recommend that you communicate this to your opponent.

The most simple way to use the Fae in your games of Warcry is the same as our first suggestion in the preceding Age of Sigmar ruleset, this is just as easily done in Warcry.

Another way to use the Fae is to use the The Mindstealer Sphiranx and its Abilities. We would recommend using a different model that better reflects the creature that the Fae has taken over (unless it’s taken over a Sphiranx we suppose), but the actual Abilities reflects a Fae quite well.

Soulbound

If you’re a Game Master in a Soulbound campaign, first of all, well done! With that said, we would recommend reading through the information on the Fae here on this page, and Tapestry of Fate stories they feature in, to get a good idea of where and how a Fae could be introduced into your campaigns. In terms of their statlines, Fae come in at different threat levels, and so we’d recommend being flexible with how strong they are. The Fae are more likely to use their wits to escape a threat, but if attacked, they are likely to simply snip the players’ strands of fate, rather than brandish a weapon. This doesn’t necessarily kill a player, but certainly would drive them either insane, or into a catatonic state.
