Beset by the Realm Curse, it’s inhabitants transformed into savage beasts, the city of Lunascenion has found deliverence in ancient rite and forbidden lore. Now it turns it gaze to taming the realm beyond its borders.
The City of Lunascenion was founded along the shores of the Thyll river, to the east of the Talus Plateau. To the south, the river falls down the Duskbite cliffs to the sea, to the north, the mineral rich mountains of the Aridian range rise, and to the west, nestled within the Archimite valley, lies the Bronze Portal realmgate to Chamon. Commanding strong travel and trade routes, and with access to some natural resources, the location was seen as a prime location for settlement. Most of the city lies on the Eolith island in the middle of the river, believed to be the remains of some great beast now covered with silt and soil. Protected by high walls and the rivers banks, the majority of the city is well defended against the beasts and warbands that stalk the wilds of Ghur.
Populated by aelves, duaradin, and men, the city showed great promise after its establishment. After breaking the local greenskin tribes during the Foundation wars, they were able to avoid any major conflict for many years. By the time the chaotic host of Andiren the Distorter fell upon them, the city’s walls were raised, and the army broke upon the stone bulwarks to be washed away by the relentless flow of the Thyll river. Relations were also established between Lunascenion and surrounding cities, including the Kharadron sky port of Barak-Tyr through the Bronze Portal, in the Chamon.
Despite their success though, a growing malaise was spreading through the city. Whether drawn to the corpse of the great beast upon which they had built upon, or exuded from the amberstone washing down stream, the bestial nature of the realm began to exert itself upon the city’s inhabitants. At first it was seen as a blessing, the bestial strength some men found themselves with a boon against the raiders and wild animals that still ravaged the surrounding countryside. Slowly though, it began to take its toll. Men began to lose their minds and bodies to savagery, lashing out against their families or companions. Isolated cases at first, their numbers grew until strict lockdowns were imposed and regular hunts conducted when the winds from the realm’s edge waxed strong, and were answered by the howls of beasts.
Hearing of Lunascenion’s plight, and fearing the repercussions, the Order of Azyr dispatched a contingent of Witch Hunters and Shadow Blades to investigate the city. Their mission to find a way to stop the Realm Curse, or, failing that, ensure that the city would not come to threaten the rest of the region.
After the untimely death of Eduard, the cohort’s leader, the City Council feared the worst for their fate, and that of Lunascenion. But his place was taken by the young Witch Hunter Doranii, whose arcane research uncovered wards that helped stem the tide of the curse. She was not the only one searching for an answer to the city’s plight. The Adherents of Stone emerged as a powerful cult that embraced the permanence of stone against the warping nature of the realm’s curse. Digging deep in mines below the river, the Duaradin discovered strange crystals that they said promised salvation and they began to cultivate over all else. Meanwhile in their spires, the aelves burnt away the affliction with blessed flame they said was an echo of the Ur-phoenix’s power.
It seemed a time of celebration for many in the city as the realm curse receded, even if it did not disappear completely. Others though, were not convinced. Talethrain, leader of the shadow blade operatives, worried about the nature of the powers embraced in desperation to stop the curse. He feared that Doranii and her fellow witch hunters had become blinded to the consequences of their actions in their fanatical pursuit of an end to the curse. In the night of the shattered knives, every shadowblade operative, and the witch hunters that had joined them, were killed. Doranii claimed to be acting out of self defense, and promised that any who sought to staunch the will of Sigmar would meet a similar fate.
The night proved a turning point in the landscape of the city. The authority of the witch hunters and cults grew. And as the wind from the realm edge waxed strong, their methods grew ever more drastic in halting the spread of the Realm Curse. The adherents of stone stalked the streets, their implacable masks slick with blood. Great pyres burned day and night within the domain of the aelves, fed by those that had succumbed to the curse. Below the earth, the enigmatic crystals spread over rock and duardin alike. All the while, rumors persisted of disappearances around the tower of Doranii, the Four Armed Witch.
Hearing of the city’s fate, local warlords saw an opportunity. They began moving in force, taking the outlying villages and farms around Lunascenion, believing the city unable to defend itself, much less the territory beyond its walls. It was the Brazen Lord Kal’gareth that made the first advance upon the city. Besieging the outer suburbs on the river bank beyond the walls, he quickly took them and established himself before the city’s gate. There, he demanded a tithe of blood and gold or else he would put the entire city to the sword. When the gates opened, he realized his mistake as the unified army of Lunascenion emerged to do battle, led by Doranni herself. Bringing the very city alive in their defense, the defenders shattered the besieging force, with Kalgareth himself torn apart by Doranni’s magic.
Since then, the army of Lunascenion has struck forth to reclaim their lost land, and even ventured further afield to take new territory. Their campaigns waxing and waning as they seem drawn back to the city by some indiscernible cycle. Within the walls of the city itself, fear, and the Realm Curse still run rampant in the long nights.

Power no longer rests in the Lunascenion City Council, instead it is the Witch Hunters and cults leaders that now rule the city, carving out their influence and domain amidst the streets. Though they band together in times of war, each have their own ambitions and designs on the city.
Multiple factions have arisen in the city, each searching for their own deliverance from the terrible Realm Curse that beset them. Whether in crystals deep below the earth, or the pale light of the moon high above, they have found the power to shape their fate.
