The Beards of the Horizon
Drogan Copperwrench started his skyfarer career as an endrinrigger, constructing and maintaining their mighty sky-ships. He had weather fierce storms and tense combat while climbing the enigmatic ranks inside the Guild of Endrineers. It came to pass that on a faithful sojourn to locate a precious vein of Aethergold, that the small fleet he was a part of were attacked by foul Tzeentchian demons. A terrible battle broke out but rather quickly the Kharadron ships were overwhelmed. The end seemed close but Drogan saw a way out. Gathering up a small group of fellow endrinriggers and a trio of skywardens, he jumped to an abandonned gun hauler floating passed the frigate they had been serving on. As the skywardens fended off the lesser demons that assaulted the Duardin, Drogan and his entrepid crew set about performing emergency repairs. Quick and dirty repairs were soon finished and not a moment to soon, as the skywardens were sorely pressed. After unleashing a devastating salvo to clear the demons from the overwhelmed wardens, the endrineers grabbed their fellows and jumped ship. The last to remain was Drogan himself, steering the gunhauler at the greater demon leading the force and pushing the vessel all ahead full before taking to the sky himself. As he used his damaged Aether-Endrin to descend to the ground, he heard a loud explosion behind him as the small vessel crashed into the fiend and the well placed explosives detonated. None of the demons followed after the duardin endrineer but with his Endrin damaged Drogan was unsure if he could safely land. A long and dangerous plumet followed where he tried all he could to slow his descend, eventually crashing down on the ground with a loud crack.
Some time later, Drogan woke up and although hurt badly realised that he had survived. His Aether-Endrin was badly damaged but he was able to salve some tools and construct some makeshift support to help him walk. After an hour of walking he stumbled upon what seemed to be an abandoned mine. Searching some of the buildings he actually found his lost companions had set up camp inside the mine entrance and were licking their wounds. After resting and eating some of the rations they still had on them, Drogan set the group to work. The skywardens, calling themselves now the Redoubt of the Constant, in light of their fierce defense agains the changelings of Tzeentch, were set to security and gathering food supplies. At the same time the Endrineers, referring to themselves now as Drogan’s Wrench, set about finding any useful gear they could salvage. As true druarding, with stubborness, diligence and unfailing efficiency, the small band managed to survive and even bring back some parts of the mining camp to life. Several days had passed when the Redoubt returned from a foraging expedition with a great discovery, they had found a crashed gunhauler not to far from the mine, probably a left over from their own battle in the sky. The Kharadron quickly set to work, in hauling the small vessel back to the mine, certain that with quick repairs the vessel could fly them back home. The vessel itself was easily repaired with reclaimed wood from the few ramshackle buildings strewn about, however, the buoyancy endrin was damaged beyond repair. If they had not been stout duarding then surely despair would have set in by now but stubborn as their kin, the survivors refused to give up. Drogan once more came with the plan that they should search the mine to see if any deposits remained that could assist in crafting a new endrin. With renewed determination the endrineers delved into the deep mine, what they found there was not what they anticipated. It seems that although the mine was abandoned, it was in fact not depleted as they had initially though. Large copper veins were found but something seemed off by them. After mining a few pieces and analyzing them, they found out that quicksilver had actually polluted the copper and it was probably deigned unusable. Drogan was not deterred though and upon finding a stash of tainted copper ingots he set to work with his crew. The work was hard and laborious but never has a duardin complained from heavy toil. It took 2 weeks of work but a new bouyancy endrin was crafted. The main body was a dark copper with a colour changing sheen to it. Sceptical about it’s viability, Drogan decided to test it out himself, rather than risk his fellow kin, for kin they had become by now. Miraculously with less aether gold than a normal gunhauler he was able to take off, the new endrin somehow seeming to amplify the lifting effect of the precious substance. After patching up the smaller endrins of the band of Skyriggers, they hooked up and went off, back to Karak-Zilfin.
Having been missing for almost 2 months, the great skyport has written off the doomed skyfleet. So it was with great surprise when a battered gunhauler held aloft by a strange endrin sailed into port carrying 7 Skyriggers. Praised for their survival and ingenuity, the small band of duardin were welcomed home with much celebration. The Guild of Endrineers saw the potential of Drogan and raised him to the status of Endrinmaster, especially after he shared some of the mysteries of the transmogrified copper they found. He was however clever enough to keep the location of the mine secret. Drogan’s clan as well was joyous to have him return from the dead, therefore it was easy when the newly raised Endrinmaster petitioned for a loan to start his own chartered company to get approval of the clan council. He quickly hired his band of Skyriggers and thanks to salvage rights owned the newly crowned Copper Kettle. After much needed repair and recuperation they set out once more to properly settle the mine and start producing a new and improved type of buoyancy endrin. The first steps toward the Admiral’s Council had been made and who knows maybe even the title of Lord Magnate.
