Barak-Hirn, the City of Heralds, home to the famed museum of Zagaz-Thragh and dotted with auction halls at every corner selling storied artefacts to the highest bidder. Storytelling is commerce in this Kharadron skyport, and no better harbour exists from which to launch an expedition into the many forgotten places of the Mortal Realms.
Creator Notes
The Expeditions of Barak-Hirn are the umbrella under which my Warhammer stories involving the Kharadron Overlords exist; the backdrop of Barak-Hirn was so fun and vibrant to occupy that I wanted to make it available for everyone to enjoy and use in games of Soulbound or in the adventures told by your armies.
The duardin of Barak-Hirn are a contrast to the gentle skystream their skyport inhabits as they fill the streets and ale halls with a booming whirlwind of harsh guttural Kharadrid to bark out the latest news, to call for another round of drink in exchange for tales from returned crews, or to solicit a higher bid at the auction block. Adding to their voices are the many other peoples of Grand Alliance Order who make the long journey to the Sea of Scholars for three possible reasons: the artisan ales, the prestigious and public museum, and the black market of antiquities from all over the Mortal Realms.
Storytelling is commerce in this Kharadron skyport, and since it literally pays to be informed, the people of Barak-Hirn are often surprisingly knowledgeable of the latest goings-on across the Free Cities and beyond.
This wealth of knowledge is primarily facilitated by the many expedition fleets Barak-Hirn launches to scour the Realms for lost artefacts and secrets of the Age of Myth. The pursuit of truth, known here as “alechaeology”, and of profit fuels the entrepreneurship and curiosity of Barak-Hirn’s arkanauts, leading to the proliferation of alechaeological expedition companies (AECs) such as The Sons of Bugman AEC and the famous Zagaz-Thragh, the personal treasure fleet of Havard Erkansson, Barak-Hirn’s Curator-Magnate.
The Curator-Magnate’s famous motto “In ruin, opportunity” is the intrepid spirit that guides the fleets of Barak-Hirn deep into the dangerous Chaos-infested wilds as explorers, or boldly into military conflicts as mercenaries eager to snatch up the spoils before others are able. After all, it’s never enough to simply return to port with a fortune: the story is worth at least twice each treasure’s volume in aethergold.
