Weave-wide Event:

The Hungering Steppe

The Hungering Steppe is a region of Ghur where various factions fight over beasts and bones. This steppe is the focal point for the Path to Story Podcast. As the armies from the podcast explore the area, we’re inviting players from around the world to explore and create alongside us! The results of this campaign will help shape the Steppe featured in the podcast.

This Narrative Campaign will be using our Quest system, with Quests made specifically to help you decide what your options are. It’s easy to participate in these Quests; simply read through the relevant Quest info, play a game, and then comment on the Quest page to tell us what happened and if you “won” or not.

The factions of the Steppe survived through the Age of Chaos and the coming of Sigmar thanks to a cycle of stable violence. Each group knew that if it were to launch a full-scale assault on its neighbours, the other factions would devour the victor in the tribe’s moments of recovery. Border skirmishes and trials of honor had settled the disputes of the Steppe in the past.

For centuries, this balance of power held firm and no one group had grown powerful enough to dominate the Steppe, despite their best efforts.

Throughout the centuries of Chaos, the forces of the Steppe would band together to force invaders outside of their lands. Each warlord was too proud to swear allegiance to any conquering force and saw the influence of outsiders to be more detrimental than the existence of their neighbours.

Though they have survived for centuries together, the people of the Steppe are not allies. Once an opportunity presents itself, they are more than happy to tear out the throats of those around them.

Never played Narrative Games before, or feel a little anxious about them?

When you’re playing a narrative game, the key thing is to talk to your opponent. Make sure you both agree on the rules of the game as well as the narrative you are hoping to tell together. We recommend using the “Narrative Play” rules, but you can still have a rewarding experience if you have “Open Play” or “Matched Play” games.

Now that that’s out of the way, here are some very general ideas you could incorporate. If you’ve ever been to a narrative event, these might look familiar to you! These are in no particular order, and they are not campaign rules.

The Rule of Interesting

Use every game as a plot point. Promote your army’s, General’s, and Alliance’s objectives. Affect the story and the rest of the campaign by communicating both to your opponent during a game, and with others outside of the games. Make your army memorable! You’re awesome, and others think you’re awesome, so share stuff!

The Rule of Making Stuff Up

Want your army to do something not covered in the rules? Magic ritual? Dig up trenches? Sacrifice a prisoner? Talk to your opponent (or GM if you have one) and see if it can be arranged. Be flexible when you get similar requests or ideas.

The Rule of Collaboration

What happens between games can be as important as what happens during games. Collaborate: with your team, with the GM or campaign creator, with your rivals! Ask questions, take risks! Make alliances, and backstab people.

The Rule of a Cool Story

Your games are stories. Your goal for each game should be to co-create that story alongside your opponent, keeping your various Quest goals in mind. When in doubt, do what feels cool for your army. In-game Objectives be damned. The winners in Narrative Play are those who get the most laughs or applause from their crazy actions, not those who win the most games. If the player who ‘lost’ the game goes away excited with how it all unfolded, you’ve hit the mark!

Timeline

The phases below are when the Quests will be made available for submissions. Leading up to each phase, you will be able to review upcoming Quests to jumpstart your creativity. We recommend hanging out in The Great Weave Discord server and sharing your ideas and stories. You may even find a partner for a collaboration!.

Easy-peasy steps for participating

1) Read some of the lore, it’s pretty cool! Also read all of the Expected Questions section below as well.

2) Check out the Discord servers, and give the Podcast a listen

3) Be sure to create a Path to Glory Host. Even if you don’t plan on playing Path to Glory Games, this will help flesh out the story of your army and help track rewards earned. Did you know that The Great Weave has a PtG creator!?

4) For each phase, review the active Quests. They are options for you to advance your narrative.

5) Play a game with the chosen Quest in mind. (You can play as many games as you like with a Quest in mind, but only submit a result once per Quest)

6) Use the comment section on the Quest page to tell us what happened in your game.

7) You can also submit using standard submissions by creating new posts about your endeavours, characters, and other creations. Use this for submitting stories, hobby reports, and anything else you think doesn’t quite fit into a comment section in the Quest. Just be sure to include:

    • A link in the text to the Quest you’re submitting towards.
    • Inform us what sort of game you’ve played (AoS, Warcry, Soulbound etc.)
    • And note: If you do submit this way, they will also be posted on this page.

And don’t forget you can get creative with all of this! You could have custom rules, a custom-made table, maybe some crazy scenario in mind. You can do anything!

The Story So Far…

Path to Story Introduction

Are you heroic enough to walk the path? Paul, Spencer, and Will come together to introduce Path to Story, a narrative Age of Sigmar podcast. Join us as we learn about these three warlords, their relationship with Warhammer, and the stories they’re hoping to tell in the field of battle.

The Path Laid Before You

In the first episode of Path to Story, Paul, Spencer, and Will discuss narrative play for Age of Sigmar. We create a shared understanding of the mechanics of Path to Glory in order to take the first steps and begin our adventure.

To Those That Walk This Path

In this episode, Paul, Spencer, and Will introduce you to the narrative of Path to Story. Come and learn about the two armies that will be battling it out within the Hungering Steppe, Paul’s Dawnbringer Crusade and Will’s Stormhost.

On This Bloody Path

In this episode, the first battles on the Hungering Steppe are finally fought. We discuss our hobby progress for the month and get excited about narrative events. For the first battles, Paul and Will explain the narrative rationale behind the games they’ve played. From creating battleplans, setting up terrain, to the strategies and tactics deployed on the field of battle itself.

Two Paths Diverge in the Woods

Havoc, Spiders, and a way to enter the Hungering Steppe? This episode has it all! While we weren’t able to play games together, we have more than enough to share with you all. Paul and Will both talk about their hobby accomplishments for the month before doing a deep dive into Narrative events and how to utilize them for your Path to Glory.

The Dangerous Path Home

In our latest episode, Paul and Will talk about their first battles in a while. As part of that, we discuss the importance of balancing your hobby with other life events. Paul brings the might of the Celestial Hurricanum to bear, Will once again pitches his online event, and Spencer learns about the troubled history of the Stormvaults.

Hungering Steppe Quests

Quests are adventures that you, usually through a Hero, or army can undertake. Most people will play through these within an Age of Sigmar or Warcry game, as part of a Soulbound adventure, or within a Path to Glory campaign. We’re inviting you to play within the Hungering Steppe location, and you can report back to how it went through the Quests that are available.

Expected Questions

Does it matter which army I play as?

You can play as any AoS faction. The Hungering Steppe has been separated from the realms for centuries and the groups in power do not care about the Grand Alliance that you come from.

Who can play? Can I play Solo, or with TTS?

If you’re reading this, you can almost certainly play! Yes, solo games are fine, and TTS is also fine

How do Quests even work?

The Quests presented are decisions your warlord is making in their Path to Glory. Anyone can submit to any Quest, but you can only submit to one quest in a given Phase.

Does it matter which army I play against?

Not at all. In fact, your opponent doesn’t even need to be playing in the campaign for it to “count” towards what’s happening. Very similar to how Path to Glory works.

All that matters really is:

  • What Quest are you trying to interact with when playing your game?
  • Did you have a win, loss, or draw?
This is a Path to Glory campaign. Do I need to play Path to Glory games?

Not at all. We’re using the Path to Glory mechanics to define the campaign but you can play games using any Battlepack you want. We do recommend playing Path to Glory games as it will be easier to manage but the choice is up to you and your opponent.

I'm super not familiar with playing Narrative games, what should I keep in mind?

We’ve got a section below, check that out!

Can I play as an existing Hero?

Yes! Of course! But this is the story of your characters. Just like how the Path to Glory system doesn’t allow for a Unique character to be your Warlord, we recommend not using a named character created by Games Workshop.

What Game Systems are Accepted?

Right now, we’re expecting games to be played in the Warcry or Age of Sigmar Tabletop systems. If you’d like to get involved in Soulbound, reach out to us and we’ll create dedicated Quests just for you.

Is this the only Weave Event?

Nope! There are more on the way!

Tapestry of Fate

The Hungering Steppe campaign is part of Tapestry of Fate, find out more here:

The Setting: The Hungering Steppe

The land from which the area is named. This vast expanse of flat land is home to many roving beasts and nomadic peoples.

The Swallowing Bogs

Those who come across the wetlands of the bogs would be justified in thinking that it was any other swamp. But the dark waters hide a darker secret.

The Fangwood

Compared to the other areas of Ghur, the Fangwood is almost innocuous. The land itself does not seek to devour the settlers. While monsters still roam the forest, you would be hard pressed to find anywhere in Ghur where they do not.

Your Path to Glory Hosts

We’re inviting players to contribute to this brand new setting as our armies explore the area. One of the ways you can do this is by playing alongside us, creating your own Path to Glory Host, and completing Quests. If you head over to the Path to Glory creator, you’ll be able to create your host to enter the region. When you do so, they’ll appear both in our Ghur Realm page, as well as on this page for all to see!

Player-Submitted Hosts

Waaagh! Stovepipe!

An up and coming Waaagh! led by a brash MegaBoss known only as Stovepipe. It is rumoured that they were constructed by the Metal Realm’s magic and is used as a puppet for another, but any who say this to his face are swiftly dealt with. They use the might of enslaved Troggoths to be the brutish meatshields of their forces, while charging in the rest of the army afterwards. While they begin building up the forces for their own conquests, it isn’t uncommon for them to sell off the more rowdy Troggoths to various clients, using spare metal and sparky bits to make restraining collars for them to have better control on them.

That Ghur would be a good realm to search for monster eggs and recover Grimnirr’s essense isn’t a crazy notion, but everything else is. Who better to tame the Steppe than the stout local breed of Fyreslayers? There surely is a reason for the absence of any proiminent lodges in that region. Where there is a risk, there is opportunity.
